The Lefthanded Foundation is a global non-profit organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and celebrating the estimated 700 million+ left-handed people worldwide — roughly 10% of the world's population.
Founded on the legacy of International Left Handers Day (established in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell), the Foundation works to ensure that left-handed individuals are recognized, accommodated, and celebrated in a world overwhelmingly designed for right-handed use.
We operate across research, advocacy, education, and community — connecting left-handers with resources, challenging outdated stereotypes, and pushing for inclusive design in schools, workplaces, and everyday products.

Our mission is simple: advocate, educate, and celebrate.
Advocate — We push for left-handed inclusion in product design, workplace ergonomics, educational tools, and public policy. From scissors to desks to surgical instruments, the world is built for the 90%. We're here for the other 10%.
Educate — We fund and share peer-reviewed research on left-handedness, brain lateralization, and the unique cognitive strengths that come with being a lefty. We combat myths and provide evidence-based resources for parents, teachers, and employers.
Celebrate — We shine a light on the incredible contributions left-handers have made throughout history — from Leonardo da Vinci and Marie Curie to Jimi Hendrix and Barack Obama. Being left-handed is not a quirk; it's a superpower.
August 13, 1976 — Dean R. Campbell, founder of Lefthanders International, Inc., declares the first International Left Handers Day. The goal: raise awareness about the everyday frustrations left-handers face and celebrate their unique perspective.
1980s–1990s — The movement grows. Lefthanders International begins publishing "The Left-Hander" magazine and ships information packets to educators, parents, and workplaces around the world. Left-handed products start appearing in specialty shops.
1992 — The UK-based Left-Handers Club relaunches Left Handers Day with public events, product showcases, and media campaigns, bringing it to global attention.
2000s–2010s — Social media transforms the day into a worldwide trending event. Hashtags like #LeftHandersDay and #SouthpawPride go viral. Brands, athletes, and public figures join in, sharing their left-handed stories.
Today — What started as a single awareness day is now a year-round conversation about inclusivity, design equity, and the unique strengths of left-handed people. The Lefthanded Foundation continues this legacy, turning a day into a movement.
